About Us

Established as a gated community in 1982, Gateway Mountain, from its inception, was developed with great care to ensure owner privacy and to preserve the natural beauty of the mountain for its owners and residents. Consisting of 3.000 acres of healthy 80-to-100-year-old hardwood forests, largely undeveloped because of the terrain, you’ll discover a very low density of building sites to acreage and forest has been consistently maintained by the developers.

Gateway Mountain peaks on three significant ridges reaching elevations to 3000' feet, with the only amenities offered being those created by nature. Two lakes, magnificent waterfalls, a trout pond and numerous century-old logging trails are all found within the interior of the mountain.  Harboring an abundance of common areas and parks for the enjoyment by owners and their guests, you also find spectacular ridge-top views of three states, the Blue Ridge Mountains and dense forests with bold streams and huge outcrops of rock. Quickly you will come to understand what makes this property is so very unique. On a map, Gateway Mountain lies between Mt. Mitchell to the north and Lake Lure to the south, providing breathtaking views of each noteworthy landmark.

Gateway Entrance Sign         Nestled 25 miles east of Asheville, North Carolina and a short “crows fly” south of the quaint community of Old Fort, a property owner explained coming to Gateway Mountain this way, "You start leaving the real world lifestyle about seven miles from the interstate and once you arrive on the mountain, it's like entering another country."  Located within easy driving distances are movie theaters, numerous golf courses, shops, shopping malls, casual and fine dining and all the playground that western North Carolina offers.

A gated community, Gateway Mountain is preserved with sensible restrictive covenants to protect the property values of its residents and to ensure an excellent quality of life. Some of the primary restrictions you’ll find are: no mobile homes, no hunting or discharging of firearms, a 1275 square foot minimum structure size, residential structures only and - you can't paint your house purple!  While there is no required time frame for completion of a residence, once construction begins, the exterior must be completed within 18 months.

There is a wide variety of existing homes and cabins on Gateway Mountain built under architectural guidelines established for the community.  Here you’ll find most homes reflect an Appalachian architectural flair constructed of woods such as cedar, cypress, white pine and natural stone which is abundant in North Carolina. There are log, post and beam, timber frame and contemporary homes represented on the mountain.  Homes, cabins and cottages range from simple second home getaways to magnificent full time residences.

The forest on Gateway Mountain consists of hardwoods such as red and white oak, maple, poplar, locust and dogwood. There is also an abundance of evergreens such as hemlock, rhododendron, mountain laurel and white pine. Some of the hemlock trees are estimated to be over one hundred years old with a majority of the mature trees on the mountain dated up to 100 years old. Gateway Mountain has been designated as a wildflower management area. Here the forest floor can be found blanketed with many wildflower varieties in the Spring time and Summer. The blooming period extends throughout the spring with a colorful display of dogwoods and forsythia, followed by mountain laurel, mixed with flaming azaleas and later rhododendrons providing a kaleidoscope of color. Of course, the most spectacular show is in the Fall when the leaves of the deciduous trees change their colors. The forested Mountain comes ablaze with color beginning in the higher elevations around the first week of October and continuing through mid-November in the lower elevations. Apples, peaches, muscadine grapes and chanterelle mushrooms can be found growing on the Mountain, as well as ginseng and other native herbs used by the Cherokee Indians who once inhabited this area.

Wildlife is permanently protected on Gateway Mountain.         Water is plentiful on the Mountain, primarily originating from natural springs. As previously mentioned, Gateway Mountain has two interior lakes perfect for canoeing, swimming and fishing, with both lakes having picnic areas as well.  A well-stocked trout pond has been designated for young children to allow them the opportunity to catch their first fish!  Also you will discover "Standing Rock Falls” and “Majestic Falls" two beautiful waterfall settings right out of a movie set.  Thanks to the developers who are dedicated to protecting this kind of natural beauty forever, these tremendous 100' high waterfalls will always be here for property owners to enjoy.

Wildlife is permanently protected on Gateway Mountain. Birds of many different species from the small Carolina bluebird to majestic hawks, turkeys, grouse, quail and hummingbirds call Gateway Mountain home. Deer, fox, bobcat, bear and others have also been spotted relaxing on the mountain.  As the sign says when you enter the mountain, "This is a wildlife sanctuary." The only wildlife "problem" encountered thus far has been an occasional deer enjoying the fruits of a resident's garden. Domestic animals are welcome and seem to enjoy the mountain just as much as their owners, not to mention the mountain’s original inhabitants.

Gateway Mountain is what the locals call a "home place." Property on the mountain is not something to be bought and sold merely as a monetary investment, but rather, property at Gateway Mountain is something to be cherished, preserved and passed down to future generations.  Ownership at Gateway Mountain is much like making a covenant with Mother Nature to preserve and protect.

Completely private and secluded, the developers caution prospective owners that they should be capable of enjoying their own company because as a homeowner so eloquently stated, "You don't see your neighbor unless you really want to." However, if you value privacy in a select, gated community designed to preserve the natural beauty of each homesite, Gateway Mountain is just what you have been searching for. For additional information, please feel free to call or contact us.
